Frequently Asked Questions
When does registration open?
Registration typically opens in mid-August and closes September 1. The registration link will be on the main page of the SPCHA website when it is available. Please note, you will need a USAHockey member number to complete the registration process.
When does the hockey season start and end?
The schedule varies somewhat based on age. Evaluations for Squirts/10U through Bantams/15U typically begins the last week of September and the season concludes at the end of February. Team selections are usually announced the first Friday of October with practices beginning immediately. Evaluations for Mites/8U begin in mid-October and usually run for two weekends. Teams are picked and the first practices begin the first weekend in November. The season begins the first weekend in November for Mini Mites and runs through February. Practices are held on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season. Practice times are usually held in the morning but vary depending on available ice times.
Why am I not receiving any of the SPCHA emails?
Our primary form of communication to parents is email, so it’s important that you receive all of the latest information. Please make sure you enter your email during the registration process. Any email that is entered should receive SPCHA communications throughout the season. If you entered an email and aren’t receiving any correspondence, please be sure to check your junk folder.
Why are practices held so early in the morning or late at night?
SPCHA is given ice times from Ramsey County. The times and locations are made by the County throughout the season. We work hard to use our ice time in the most appropriate way and aim to create an equitable system for all of our teams.
Can my daughter participate in the boys’ program?
Your daughter is welcome to play in the Capitals boys’ program. However, the Capitals host an amazing girls' program (8U, 10U, 12U and 15U) with practices tailored to each individual’s ability level.
Can my child play in an older age division?
We believe that kids should play in their appropriate age divisions, in part, because our development program teaches age-appropriate skills and abilities. We do allow kids to play upwhen an upper level team has an insufficient number of kids. In that case, players who played on an A team the previous season will be considered to move up. Those players would be placed on the C team of the next level up. Decisions to move players up must come at the recommendation of the hockey operations committee and approved by the SPCHA board.
What equipment does my child need?
Where do I purchase equipment for my child?
Equipment is available at many stores including Play It Again Sports, Pure Hockey, Strauss and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Used or inexpensive equipment works well for young kids, especially when they are first starting. While it can be an expensive investment, your child should be ableto use it for three to five years. If you cannot afford to buy hockey gear for your child, please contact the association.
